Wow, I can think of a lot of things that would make a flight unpleasant, but this certainly takes the cake. On a British Airways flight from Miami to London last Friday, an automated message announced over the intercom that the plane was about to crash land in the ocean. Thankfully, the whole thing was a mistake – albeit a frightening one. From CNN.com:
British Airways is apologizing to passengers of a trans-Atlantic flight after a recorded message announcing the plane was about to make an emergency landing in the ocean was mistakenly played over the intercom.
The incident, which happened on a flight from Miami to London late Friday, caused panic in the cabin.
Passengers told British newspapers that about three hours into the journey, a recorded voice suddenly announced: “This is an emergency, we will shortly be making an emergency landing on water.”
About 30 seconds later, the flight crew announced the whole thing was a mistake and that the message should be ignored. Oops!
Usually if you miss a connection or a plane is overbooked, the airlines give you free vouchers or something, right? What do they give out when they mistakenly tell you you’re about to die a cold death in the depths of the Atlantic Ocean?
